Russell is acknowledged as one of the greatest players in the long history of Australian Rules Football.

The only four-time winner of South Australia’s most prestigious individual football award, the Magarey Medal, his solo achievements belied the fact that he was the quintessential team man.

Like his contemporary, Barrie Robran, Russell off the field was shy and unassuming preferring his football do the talking. Ebert debuted for Port as an 18 year old and in his debut season was the leading goal kicker for the club.

Three years later, he won the Club’s Best and Fairest. He played 446 games – 392 for Port Adelaide, 25 for North Melbourne and 29 State. He also captained the State Team on 3 occasions. He was inducted into the Australian Football Hall of Fame in 1996.
