Indisputably one of Australia’s most accomplished cricketers. His class was apparent from his very first appearance for the state when he hit twin half centuries as an 18 year old. When Chappell made his Test debut against England in 1977, Australia was 5/107; he teamed with Ian Redpath for a 219 sixth wicket partnership and a personal century. In all he played in 87 Tests, captaining Australia 48 times and surpassing Sir Donald Bradman as the most prolific run scorer in Australian cricket history with 7,110 runs.

In 1973 he was awarded the Wisden Cricketer of the Year and named the Australian Sportsmen of the Year in 1976. In 1979 he was awarded an MBE and was inducted into the Australian Sport Hall of Fame in 1986. In 2000 he was named in the Australian Test Team of the Century, in 2001 he was inducted into the International Cricket Council Hall of Fame in 2002 the Australian Cricket Hall of Fame, and the following year he was officially recognised as the fourth best Australian Cricketer of all time.
